Here are the most impactful books/transcripts/articles I have read this week.

1. French Grammar - I am currently in Paris, France, studying International Relations for the semester. Bettering my French, I have been reading this French grammar book, Collins Easy Learning French Grammar. I actually found the book in Greenpoint, Brooklyn late last year. It was one of those NYC perks where locals donate books by leaving them on the streets for strangers to find. It’s been one of the best things I have read and studied so far this week because, since it is a used donated French translation book, certain phrases are highlighted most likely by its previous owner. This following phrase was starred.

“C’est combien, ce pantalon?” This is must needed phrase especially for me.

But what’s even more fascinating is that there’s a Paris address written on one of the pages.

“Studio Galande, Rue Galande”

I looked it up; it’s a cinema studio-house popular for showing Rocky Horror. It’s not far from where I am living. Alors, I may grab a few friends and check it out soon.

2. State of the Union - Another fun read, but has to do with current event, was Amy Goodman and Bill McKibben’s commentary (2018) on the U.S. President’s State of the Union speech ignoring climate change. The transcript was recorded and published on Democracy Now.

“We have ended the war on American energy, and we have ended the war on beautiful, clean coal,” (Trump, 2018).

Beautiful. Clean. Coal.

3. Powerful Women - This article is over a month old but still very relevant in proving the #MeToo Movement is representative of women of all industries and all over the world. Kyle Crichton's article (2017) from The New York Times travels around the globe interviewing women from vast lines of careers to talk about their fight against injustices and inequalities. One of my favorite spotlights from the article to read was Former First Lady of Indonesia Sinta Nuriyah.

"Sinta Nuriyah carries forth her family’s campaign in Indonesia, holding interfaith events and establishing a network of progressive Islamic boarding schools for girls." (Crichton, 2017).

Stories like this being brought to light further build up the importance of needed support for equality and respect. Yes, these women have moved mountains for what they believe in, but just work should not be done alone nor brushed under the rug. Let their voices be heard and fuel the movement of actual change.
