You Know You Need Unique New York

So, at the beginning of this glorious summer, I gave you guys a list of ideas of things to do that would be life changing in some way. How'd you do? How was your summer?

Did you travel? Did you work? Did you get bangs? You got bangs, didn't you?

I hope I was inspiring enough to get you guys to do something that was positively life altering. I am proud to say that I fulfilled a good amount of the list, myself.

I got an internship at my local art museum where I prepared new art exhibitions and taught art classes to kids ages 7-12 years old. I also got a job at Office Depot where I marketed my way into selling almost every customer I rang up a rewards card. (All retailers know that's a good thing) Ultimately, the money I raised went to purchasing my school books and other school appliances for my very first year of college. But not just any college, you see; I'm going to LIM College or the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising in New York City. And very unique New York is. It is the city that never sleeps, never questions creativity, and never passes up for a good j- walking. One of my school teachers says the red light serves as only a suggestion, and I agree. Don't even get me started on the fashion and art this city ever kindly offers: everyone has some sort creative look attached to them. Whether it is their shoes, their clothes, their hair, I find New Yorker's Style is so dearly refreshing (stay tuned for a look book through my eyes). In speaking of looks, I changed up mine by cutting my hair to my shoulders which is the shortest it has ever been. Yeah, it'll grow back, but this was a good and therapeutic change and symbol for me moving to the big city truthfully. I love my look. I may even get it colored, who knows.. I got some french tutoring from an online class which helped a lot because I am taking Advanced French this year--almost trilingual. I'm mentioning this because I referred to education as something that should be taken very seriously even when you're on a school break, graduated, or haven't seen a textbook in 20 years. Everyday's a day to learn! Even if it's only part-time, take all the learning you can get.

As far as traveling went, I've lived in various locations throughout my life (five places in the last seven years) and this summer had me live in the ever so kind Poplar Bluff, Missouri. I'll be honest: it is nothing like living on the coast. The people there are so caring and sweet. Get this: when they ask how you're doing, they actually want to know how you're doing. Now, I know people from the coast and other places may be the same way, but I'm simply generalizing here. If I were to go back to California and ask a random stranger how they were doing, I wouldn't get an answer. Instead, I'd get a weird look. I just want to make a shout out to the Bluff and brag about how sweet they are. Don't worry, Cali; you'll always have a place in my heart.

Overall, I had a fulfilling summer that definitely changed my life for the better. I learned how to work in a more professional setting whether it is handling merchandise, talking to kids, or waiting on customers at a tech store. I got used to the idea of going with the flow and being able to change when the universe wanted to alter itself. Living in New York definitely emphasized that lesson with me. I don't bat an eye when the subway is late. I won't freak out if I made a wrong turn on a street, (because when you do you'll be ten minutes behind schedule). I won't even care if I spot a Gossip Girl landmark (I'm lying. I will Fan Girl the Heck Out.)

But, I will take my academics seriously and make sure my educational, career, and spiritual goals are fulfilled in the time that I'm here for school. I'll tell you how I'm going to do that in my next post.

Realizing that this particular blog post told more about myself than most of my other posts, I'd like to change that and get more direct with you guys. I really want to show you guys how relatable I can be even if I'm telling embarrassing freshman stories. That's totally fine! We all or will have them. Moving here gave me an awful lot of ideas for this blog / website. I hope you guys are excited because I am too. I hope you guys have a magnificent day especially if you're starting school like me!
