So, I just finished my first year at LIM College. While being a student there, I've also been a student librarian for the LIM College's Adrian G. Marcuse Library & Archives. Once and awhile, I'd have to write a blog post for the Library's website. I wanted to share this particular post because social responsibility is something very important to me. Enjoy.
The fashion industry is one of the most influential and powerful businesses in the world. “Globally, fashion is a $1.5 trillion dollar industry. It employs millions of people. And while those of us working in fashion may not be changing the world, we do make important contributions to the global economy and impact the daily lives of billions of people around the world.” says Imran Amed from Business of Fashion. According to Sustainable Fashion: Why Now?: A Conversation About Issues, Practices, and Possibilities, the book I'm recommending this week, fashion obtains numerous opportunities for people, a lot of which include being sustainable and socially responsible.

Sustainable Fashion: Why Now?: A Conversation About Issues, Practices, and Possibilities
Janet Hethorn and Connie Ulasewicz
In this book, co-authors Janet Hethorn and Connie Ulasewicz uncover the issues and possibilities consumers, marketers, designers, and more have as they move toward ethical action in their business practices in the fashion industry.
My favorite part specifically from this book is chapter 4, "Pop Culture, Marketing, and the Ethical Consumer," where Rebecca Luke writes about how it is the consumer who plays a key role in promoting peace and sustainability. At the end of the day, the company will always want to please the customer. I bet you if customers start questioning the ethics of a company's business plan, things will change quickly. So, it starts with us. It is up to us initially to educate ourselves and be the first to make a true impact in the world.
It is books like these that I'm happy I am associated with the Adrian G. Marcuse Library. They have a lot of material to further learn about this subject that is Corporate Social Responsibility. This subject has grown to be something very close to my heart, and I can't wait to learn more about it especially from the library.
